A city councilman and then mayor of Palmdale, Chimbole won election to the California State Assembly in 1974 by defeating Republican Kenneth Hall, then chief deputy director of the California Department of Finance. In 1976 he narrowly defeated Republican Phil Wyman, vice president of the Antelope Valley Board of Trade. In 1978, however, Wyman came back to beat Chimbole.〔(JoinCalifornia: Election History for the State of California ). Accessed 1 July 2013〕 From 1996 to 2000 Chimbole was a member of the Antelope Valley Hospital District Board.
